The Clean 15 And The Dirty Dozen
The Clean 15 And The Dirty Dozen
by Dr. Michelle Irwin
We have talked a lot about where we hold toxins in our body and where we can be exposed, but I want to give you some ways to avoid exposure as much as possible. It is as easy as knowing what foods to choose when we go to the store and what to limit or avoid all together.
Now, it seems that this list changes from year to year sometimes because things have improved and sometimes because it may have gotten worse. The list that follows are, as of March of last year, the cleanest and dirtiest produce based on the number of pesticides found in them. This list was compiled using data from the USDA’s Pesticide Data Program.
The Dirty Dozen: foods to limit or avoid all together. This list makes me sad but remember, choose organic options and you can have them with little concern!
1. Strawberries
2. Spinach
3. Kale
4. Nectarines
5. Apples
6. Grapes
7. Peaches
8. Cherries
9. Pears
10. Tomatoes
11. Celery
12. Potatoes
The Clean 15: foods that are least contaminated and can be non-organic if necessary.
1. Avocadoes
2. Pineapple
3. Papaya
4. Eggplants
5. Cauliflower
6. Brocolli
7. Cabbage
8. Kiwi
9. Sweet Corn
10. Onions
11. Frozen Sweet Peas
12. Asparagus
13. Cantaloupes
14. Mushrooms
15. Honey Dew Melon
Remember we have a choice in what we buy, and we can create change by choosing the foods that are safest for us. By doing this we tell those who can make the change what we want more than ever. Health is by choice not by chance and we are in control of the outcome!
