Avoiding Tech Neck
How to Avoid Tech Neck
by Dr. Michelle Irwin
The new way of learning can mean amazing things for the kids today, but as we rely more and more on technology for learning we need to talk about the best way to avoid the pit falls the come with that.
The trend we are seeing in kids and people in their 20s is a straight neck that used to only be seen in people serving in the military. So much so that it was once known as military neck. Now, with the use of cell phones, tablets, and laptops on improperly positioned desktops, we are seeing this posture in children under the age of 10!
One of the best ways to avoid this position is to limit the time we are using technology. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “How can we avoid that if everything we do is using technology?” Well, when we can’t limit our time on the tech, we need to use them smartly.
Here are two simple changes you can make TODAY:
- Take breaks, make sure we use good posture, and good ergonomics.
- Understand that tummy time isn’t just for babies. Working on tablets, laptops, and phones can be done on your stomach propped up so the neck is extended more than flexed. This will be uncomfortable for a while but that might not be a bad thing since it will keep us from being in one position for too long.
Taking small steps from a young age will allow the future generations to age at a proper rate and not have the problems in abundance we are seeing now. As always Chiropractic care will help all of us lead a happier, healthier, and more energetic life!
