What’s The Best I Can Do?
What's The Best I Can Do?
by Dr. Michelle Irwin
Okay, so let’s wrap this up and put it to bed. Sleep is like water; it is something we can’t function without. When we are resting, our bodies are repair themselves and it helps with our overall mood and sanity. When we aren’t getting the sleep we need, our bodies start to shut down vital internal processes and we begin to break down both physically and emotionally. So, this month we have given tips on how to get better sleep and tonight we are going to go deeper into the why we need it!
But first, I have another question that needs to be answered since it is asked at least once a week, “What is the best bed to get?” Well, I will give you the features to look for, but if you want a brand name you can ask our front office because I don’t want this letter to turn into a commercial, strictly information here.
Support is essential to a good night’s sleep. If your bed is too soft, you can sink in and it feels like being in a hammock with no support and the curves in your body are removed or exaggerated causing pain and discomfort. Too much support and it is like sleeping on hardwood floors and the curvy parts of your body feel like they have been bruised. I am starting to sound Goldie Locks, now aren’t I? But it is true, you need a bed that is just right. Something that gives you support but allows you to sink in enough to take the pressure off your curves. This is why it is so hard for couples to find the right bed for both, we all have different curves and support needs. The best beds we have found have dual materials that allow for just this combination and soft support.
Getting a bed that has a comfort layer on top with a support layer below will allow this to happen. There are some issues with new beds and chemical releases, so finding a bed that has high quality materials is important because these beds actually have longer warranties as well. That being said, they do have a higher price point as well, but the fact that we spend 1/3rd of our life sleeping makes it a worthy investment.
We do have specific recommendations here in the office with our number one bed being a Intellibed. It is non-toxic with all of the qualities listed above. For other recommendations ask us, we have more because we know sleep is unique to everyone and we want you to get the best you can.
